Let it Flow™ – 1oz
This is Si Jin Bao’s version of a classical formula that dates back to the 10th century. It is well known for addressing symptoms of urgent, frequent, & burning urination, heavy feeling in the lower abdomen, and very little urine that is dark yellow. It is commonly used for Urinary Tract Infections.
Clear the Heat, Open the Flow
Bā Zhèng Tāng — the Eight-Herb Decoction for Rectification, known as Let it Flow — is Si Jin Bao’s concentrated decoction of the classical Song-dynasty formula for Damp-Heat lodged in the bladder: the urgent, frequent, burning, scanty urination of Damp-Heat painful urinary dysfunction.
Recorded in the Song imperial formulary nine centuries ago, Ba Zheng San — the “Eight Corrections Powder” — assembles herbs that drain Heat and Damp downward and out through the urine, opening a urinary tract that Heat has inflamed and obstructed. Si Jin Bao renders the classical powder as a concentrated, alcohol-free decoction.
From the Song Imperial Formulary
Ba Zheng San first appears in the Tài Píng Huì Mín Hé Jì Jú Fāng — the Formulary of the Pharmacy Service for Benefiting the People in the Taiping Era — the Song dynasty’s official pharmacopeia, compiled around 1107. It was created for lin syndrome, painful urinary dysfunction, of the Damp-Heat type: Heat and Damp pouring downward into the bladder, scorching the fluids and obstructing the flow of urine.
The logic has held for nine centuries. When Heat and Damp block the lower burner, the answer is neither to force the flow nor to tonify, but to clear the Heat, drain the Damp, and open the waterways — so that what is hot and stagnant leaves the body through the urine.
Bā Zhèng — “Eight [herbs that] Rectify” — names both the count of the formula’s herbs and its aim: to correct a disordered, obstructed flow of urine. The eight rectify; in decoction the formula adds Dēng Xīn Cǎo to guide the Heat out through the water.
Damp-Heat in the Bladder · 膀胱濕熱
The pattern is Damp-Heat pouring into the bladder and lower burner — Heat that burns and Damp that obstructs — frequently with Heat in the Heart channel transferring to the Small Intestine. Urine turns scanty, dark, and turbid; urination becomes urgent, frequent, and burning; the lower abdomen feels full and heavy.
- Discomfort and bloating in the lower abdomen
- Dark, turbid urination
- Scanty, difficult, painful urination
- Burning, frequent urination
- Lower back pain
- Chills and fever; bitter taste in the mouth; thirst
Classical tongue & pulse: a red tongue with a greasy yellow coating; a slippery, rapid pulse.
Nine Herbs: Clear, Drain, Unblock
Mù Tōng and Huá Shí lead — Mù Tōng drains Heat from the Heart and conducts it down to the Small Intestine while freeing the flow of urine, and Huá Shí clears Heat and drains Damp through the urine. Qú Mài, Biǎn Xù, and Chē Qián Zǐ promote urination and unblock the painful, obstructed flow.
Zhī Zǐ clears Heat from all three burners and directs it downward and out through the urine; Dà Huáng drains Heat through the stool, giving the Damp-Heat a second route out of the body. Dēng Xīn Cǎo guides Heart Heat out through the urine, and Gān Cǎo harmonizes the formula, eases the urinary pain, and tempers the cold, draining herbs so the whole works as one. Clear, drain, unblock.
When to Reach for It
Reach for Bā Zhèng Tāng for the acute, hot, obstructed urinary presentation — urgent, frequent, burning urination with scanty, dark urine and a heavy, full lower abdomen — where Damp-Heat in the bladder dominates. It is the classical answer to Damp-Heat lin syndrome.
Western conditions and terminology that are commonly associated with these TCM patterns:
- Cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis
- Prostatitis; urinary tract calculi

Bā Zhèng Tāng
The eight classical herbs of Ba Zheng San — with Dēng Xīn Cǎo to guide them — assembled to clear Heat, drain Damp, and open the urinary flow obstructed by Damp-Heat in the bladder. Below, each herb in its own right: nature, channels, classical actions, and its role in this formula.
Promotes urination and drains Damp-Heat; clears Heat from the Heart and conducts it downward to the Small Intestine; unblocks painful urinary dysfunction.
Damp-Heat painful urination; Heart Fire transferring to the Small Intestine, with mouth and tongue sores and dark, scanty urine.
Documented in the classical materia medica among the herbs that free the flow of urine and drain Heat downward. Si Jin Bao uses the Akebia source (Caulis Akebiae).
Drains Heat from the Heart and Small Intestine and frees the flow of urine — a leading herb of the formula, paired with Huá Shí.
Promotes urination and unblocks painful urinary dysfunction; clears Damp-Heat; invigorates the Blood.
Damp-Heat painful urination, including with blood or stones; hot, painful, scanty urination.
Recorded in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng (神農本草經), among the herbs for hot, obstructed urination.
Promotes urination and unblocks the painful, obstructed flow — one of three herbs opening the waterways.
Promotes urination and drains Damp-Heat; unblocks painful urinary dysfunction; kills parasites and relieves itching (chiefly external).
Damp-Heat painful urination; hot, burning, difficult urination.
Recorded in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng (神農本草經), among the Damp-Heat-draining herbs for the bladder.
Drains Damp-Heat through the urine, easing the burning dribble — working alongside Qú Mài and Chē Qián Zǐ.
Promotes urination and clears Damp-Heat; separates the clear from the turbid; clears Liver Heat and brightens the eyes; clears Lung Heat.
Damp-Heat painful urination; scanty, difficult, turbid urination.
Recorded in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng (神農本草經), a principal seed for draining Damp through the urine.
Promotes urination and clears Damp-Heat, separating the turbid from the clear so the urine runs clean again.
Promotes urination and drains Damp-Heat; clears Summer-Heat; (applied externally) absorbs Dampness and dries weeping lesions.
Damp-Heat painful urination with hot, scanty, difficult urine; Summer-Heat with thirst and scanty urination.
Recorded in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng (神農本草經), a cooling mineral for the hot, obstructed bladder.
Clears Heat and drains Damp through the urine — a cooling, unblocking mineral that leads the formula alongside Mù Tōng.
Drains Heat and relieves irritability; clears Heat from the three burners and directs Damp-Heat downward and out through the urine; cools the Blood and resolves toxicity.
Heat in the three burners; Damp-Heat with dark urine; irritability and restlessness from Heat.
Recorded in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng (神農本草經), a principal herb for draining Fire from the three burners.
Clears Heat from all three burners and channels it downward and out through the urine, joining the formula’s draining to its cooling.
Drains Heat and purges accumulation downward; clears Heat and resolves toxicity; cools the Blood and dispels stasis.
Interior Heat excess; Heat with constipation; Heat in the Blood; Damp-Heat patterns needing a downward route.
Recorded in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng (神農本草經), the principal purgative of the materia medica.
Drains Heat through the stool, giving the Damp-Heat a second route out of the body — downward, alongside the urinary route.
Promotes urination and drains Damp-Heat; clears Heart Heat and relieves restlessness, quieting the spirit.
Damp-Heat painful urination; Heart Heat with irritability and restlessness.
Documented in the classical materia medica as a light herb that clears Heart Heat through the urine.
Guides Heart Heat out through the urine — the light envoy that points the formula at the water pathways.
Clears Heat and resolves toxicity; moderates and harmonizes the other herbs; the tips (Gān Cǎo Shāo) are traditionally used to clear Heat from the urinary tract and ease painful urination.
Heat-toxicity; painful urination (the tips); the need to temper strong, cold, draining herbs.
Recorded in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng (神農本草經), traditionally called the great harmonizer of the materia medica.
Harmonizes the formula, eases urinary pain, and tempers the cold, draining herbs so the whole works together as one.

What follows is the peer-reviewed evidence behind Bā Zhèng Tāng — beginning with two clinical studies on the formula in urinary tract infection, then turning to the herbs, each selected for a documented role in clearing Heat, draining Damp, and opening the urinary flow.
Ba Zheng San is among the few classical formulas tested as a whole in modern trials — and in recurrent urinary tract infection, the very Damp-Heat presentation it was built for, it held its own against antibiotics. Beneath the formula, each herb has been examined on its own terms, and the findings converge on a single instruction: a hot, blocked bladder, cleared by draining the Heat and the Damp and opening the flow of urine. Nine centuries on, the mechanisms now have names — diuretic and anti-inflammatory, NF-κB-inhibiting and antioxidant — for what the formula has always done.
